I was driving to class tonight and was thinking about last night’s message. I couldn’t get out of my mind how simple it is - we just need Jesus. Repeatedly God tells those to come who are thirsty and weak (Is. 55, Mt. 11:28-30). He wasn’t just talking about physical needs. He was talking about both the physical AND spiritual needs.
I was driving and God totally revealed to me: we don’t need the fruit of the Spirit. We NEED Jesus! We shouldn’t strive after “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control,” (Gal. 5:22) like they are things that can be obtained.
Over and over again, God uses the metaphor of people being like branches that bear fruit (Mt. 12:33-37, Lk. 6:43-45). When Jesus was on earth, he was hungry and cursed a fig tree for having no produce (Mk. 11:12-14); it withered away by the next day.
“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (Lk. 6:43-45)
In Galatians, we read what the fruit of the spirit is (Gal. 5:22). I have often misunderstood this verse thinking that these are the characteristics I should strive to have. I failed to see that only God working within me bears this fruit - not me working by myself.
God is hungry. He has planted Jesus like a grape vine and we are the branches of The Vine. He has put each and every one of us in the places and circumstances we are in for a reason. He wants to grow us so that we will bear good fruit (the likeness of Him).
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other.” (John 15:1-17)
All we have to do is to stay, to remain in Him. All we need is Jesus. It’s at that simple.
